Revolution

Raise up your fist!
Sing along with your people!
Wave that flag as high as it deserves to be
Rising over mountains and oceans and seven thousand islands
Over a people who are called to be more --
More than who they are
More than what they are
More than they could ever dream.

Breathe in the scent of the people
Whose language challenges oppression and brings it into the foreground
Whose voice resonates within the hearts of all its members
Hearts that remain strong after racism, injustice, hardship, and the burden of being "just another third world country."

Breathe in the scent of the people
The stink of sweat and the perfume of victory
Because we cannot be killed, no matter how much we bleed.

Breathe in the motherland
Every degree of heat and humidity that fuels us
Every blossom and leaf that nurtures us.

Breathe in the motherland and feel its pulse
A heartbeat that throbs with blood that boils and persists even in its darkest hours.

This is our song, our gloria, our hallelujah!
Our ballad of pride, because we... WE are Filipinos.
Not I but we.  Not me but us.
We seek to maximize the potential of our humanity.
This is our passion!

EDIT: Okay, I don't know why DA deleted the description or something, but it happened. Now I have to write a new one, and this one won't be so long. So I guess that's okay for you all.

In any case, I haven't written poetry in a LONG LONG time. Very long. I had fairly just given up on it. Why? Because I sucked, and I didn't want to really think of beats and whatnot. Writing for spoken word is so much easier, and fancier, and I can tweak things more and go out of bounds as much as I want. And I like the sound of it in my head - sort of like drums and breaks.

So this piece is about pride in the Filipino culture. I always get mad when there's the sort of Filipino who doesn't have pride, and denies it as much as he can. If you ask me, HE is the embarrassment to the Filipino culture, more so than the dogs, cowards, and traitors of the Filipino government.

This is actually a second part to a poem that my friend wrote called "People Power". She wrote it beautifully, and the pride was practically jumping off the page. Her poem is going to go into the PCN skit I'm writing at the moment, but I was so inspired that I added to it. :) That and this piece MIGHT go into the closing, because hers is the opening piece. Ohhhh theatrics. Such a great creative outlet. :D
